Tips
Always spoon flour into the measuring cup — never scoop directly from the bag. Scooping can add 20–30% extra flour.
Level off the top of the cup with the back of a knife or a straight spatula for a consistent measurement.
Use kitchen scales for the most accurate baking results. Weight measurements are always more precise than volume.
Different flours weigh differently — almond flour (96g/cup) is much lighter than plain flour (125g/cup). Always select the right ingredient.
Brown sugar should be firmly packed into the cup before measuring. This is the standard for brown sugar unless the recipe says "loosely packed".
About this cups to grams tool
Converting cups to grams is one of the most common challenges home bakers face. A cup is a volume measurement — and different ingredients pack into that volume in completely different ways. One cup of plain flour weighs 125 grams, while one cup of caster sugar weighs 200 grams, and one cup of butter weighs 227 grams. Using the wrong conversion can throw your baking off significantly.
Most online cup measurement converters make a critical error: they apply a single generic gram value to every ingredient, as if flour and sugar had the same density. Our grams converter is ingredient-aware, using the actual measured density of each ingredient. This makes a real difference in precision baking where small errors compound.
There's a second variable that catches many bakers: US cups vs UK cups. A US cup measures 236.6ml; a UK, Australian or metric cup is 250ml — around 5% more volume. Small in casual cooking, but significant in baking conversion. This converter lets you choose your cup size so the result is always correct for your recipe's origin.
Measuring by weight (grams) rather than volume (cups) is universally recommended by professional bakers. A cup of flour scooped directly from the bag can weigh anywhere from 100 to 160 grams depending on how tightly it's packed. Spooning the flour lightly into the cup and levelling off gives a more consistent 125 grams — but using kitchen scales eliminates the variable entirely and gives you exactly what the recipe intended.
