About this celsius to gas mark tool

Celsius to gas mark conversion is needed when following a recipe that specifies gas marks but you want to know the Celsius equivalent for your electric oven, or vice versa. The converter finds the nearest gas mark for any Celsius temperature, making it easy to follow older British recipes in a modern kitchen.

Gas Mark 4 (180°C) is the most important temperature to know — it appears in the vast majority of everyday British baking recipes and is described as a "moderate" oven. From there, each gas mark step is roughly 10–14°C. Gas Mark 6 (200°C) is the standard roasting temperature; Gas Mark 7 (220°C) is hot.

The gas mark system was developed for British gas cookers and is still referenced in countless published recipe books. Even metric-era recipes often include gas mark as a third temperature option alongside Celsius and Fahrenheit. Understanding the system allows you to follow any British recipe regardless of your oven type.

If your recipe gives a Celsius temperature but your oven only shows gas marks, this converter works in reverse — type in the Celsius temperature and it shows the nearest gas mark. For temperatures between gas marks, round to the nearest mark. The difference between adjacent gas marks is small enough that it rarely matters in practical cooking.
